Department: Board of Directors
Joe Schmit is originally from Buffalo New York. He enlisted in the United States Airforce from 2003- 2007. Joe and his wife Kristin moved to Washington for the small-town community vibes they found in Shelton. Kristin was also in the Air Force and now works as a full time RN in the Emergency Department at Mason Health. They have two sons Izaak and Gabe.
Joe’s career started with the Washington State Department of Transportation in 2008. His current position is the Technical Services and Operations Officer. He previously was a volunteer firefighter at Central Mason Fire and EMS. Currently Joe is a city council member, serves on the EDC board of directors as vice chair and board chair at MACECOM. He has been working with the EDC since 2018.
Joe’s favorite thing about the EDC is to collaborate with forward thinking professionals. These individuals really focus on what they are doing now to help long term. He says the work is extremely rewarding because the EDC has scraped together every nickel from every opportunity to help those businesses who need it during a global crisis.
Joe says he loves Shelton because of the small-town community feel. He said that this community is the kind that will do anything they can to help. Community is important to the Schmit family. Joe says “I firmly believe community is what defines us; it's our brand. It brings out our spirit, our pride and demonstrates what matters most to us.”
He enjoys spending his time with his family boating on the waters, fishing, hiking in the woods and time in the outdoors with friends. Joe’s favorite place to hike is anywhere in the Olympics. He also mentioned how affordable it is to live in Mason County as a huge plus.
Joe was recently selected as a member of the class of 2021 South Sound Business Magazine's 40 under 40. South Sound Business considers these 40 remarkable people as "the best, brightest, and most ambitious South Sounders under the age of 40."
